From economic growth to decent work
Processing more cashews locally can create jobs and economic opportunities. But growth does not automatically mean decent work. Many workers in the cashew industry face low wages and difficult working conditions.
CNV Internationaal’s Francisca van Dusseldorp and Cynthia Niamouttie, director of cashew processing factory CILAGRI-CAJOU, will share their experiences from Côte d’Ivoire and discuss what workers need to benefit from the sector’s growth.
Can companies and trade help make the difference?
There are also promising examples. Johnny Cashew shows how companies can work towards a cashew supply chain in which decent work is part of the business model. Founder Roel van de Weijer will share the company’s approach and the lessons they have learned.
European trade policy can play a role too. Member of the European Parliament Catarina Vieira, rapporteur on the new EU trade agreement with Côte d’Ivoire, will discuss how trade agreements can contribute to a fairer cashew sector.
How can companies, workers and policymakers ensure that the cashew boom benefits the people working in the industry?
